"Trampe" - The bicycle lift

In an effort to encourage people to use their bikes when they go downtown, and to reduce pollution, Trondheim have unveiled the world's first bicycle lift. The lift is placed at the bottom of a steep hill called Brubakken right by Gamle Bybro ("The Old Town Bridge"), and can take you up the 130 meter (426 feet) long hill, almost up to Kristiansten Fortress, at a pace of 2 meters (6,5 feet) per second. The bicycle lift consists of an underground cable. To use the lift you just place your foot on the metal plate, and the lift pushes you up the hill. The mechanism of the lift is placed under the ground, so it doesn't interfere with other traffic, and is virtually invisible so it blends in to the street and city picture perfectly.

Brilliant! I want one in Paris!!
Great idea! In San Francisco, it would help a lot but would be pretty expensive for the city....!
Wow... if this comes to San Francisco, I might purchase a bike after all! ;-)

What a great idea. We have something like it, but it is a train with a large bike platform on the front that takes passengers and bikes up a steep hill.
